Building
Building within Rainier city limits must be reviewed and approved by the City of Rainier’s Building Official, City Planner, and Engineering department. Building permit applications are available in the forms list below and at City Hall.
Buildings that require permits include, but are not limited to, new homes, shops, pole buildings, sheds larger than 200 square feet, carports, patio covers, mechanical permits (i.e., new water heater, ac units), reroofing/roofing structures, remodels, additions, decks, installation of solar panels, and demolitions.
Projects may also require review and approval by the City Planner and Engineer. If you are unsure if you need to provide additional information for review by these departments, please reach out to our City Planner.
Land clearing must be approved by the city prior to starting any work. There are many wetlands throughout our city and there are a variety of restrictions that have been placed by the Department of Ecology. Please reach out to our City Planner, prior to commencing any work, to avoid possible penalties or fees.
Inspections
How to Submit a Building Permit
- Download current Building Permit.
- Download the Building Permit Checklist (not needed for mechanical permits or reroofs)
- Complete the building permit in-full and gather all applicable documents as outlined in the building permit checklist. Note: per the application checklist, do not forget that all documentation must also be submitted on a thumb drive. Application packets without a thumb drive will not be accepted.
- Submit in one of the following ways:
- In-person at City Hall
- Mail to: City of rainier, PO Box 258, Rainier, WA 98576
